Let me start by welcoming the delegation of the Dominican Republic and thanking them for this thorough presentation.
We appreciate the Dominican Republic’s engagement in the UPR process and its openness in dealing with the recommendations submitted to it.
Algeria commended the national report for recognizing that inequality was a historical characteristic of the socio-economic makeup of the Dominican Republic. We appreciate that our recommendation in favour of promoting equality within the population has been accepted.
We note the efforts undertaken by the Government to eradicate corruption. As earlier recommended by our delegation, we encourage the Government to further consolidate its policy in this regard by acceding to the UN Convention against Corruption.
We also wish to refer to our recommendation for strengthening the approach of the Government in the area of migration and we welcome the announcement made following the interactive dialogue that the Dominican Republic is working towards the aim of ratifying the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and their families. This example should be followed by more advanced countries which claim leadership in human rights but which are still reluctant to ratify this core human rights instrument. We also encourage the Government to request, whenever necessary, the assistance from relevant international institutions.
We have no doubt as to the commitment of the Government of the Dominican Republic to promote and protect human rights. Therefore, we recommend the adoption of the national report of this country.
