Statement of the Algerian Delegation
on the adoption of the UPR of Greece
Geneva, 22 September 2011
Madame President,
My delegation warmly welcomes H. E. Ms. Maria Telalian and her delegation and thanks her for the updates on the human rights situation in her country as well as for the clear responses provided on the pending recommendations.
During the interactive dialogue, Greece received an important number of recommendations. We commend Greece for its commitment to the promotion of human rights, which was translated by accepting 105 out of a total of 124 recommendations received.
My delegation formulated recommendations related to the ratification of the CRDP, the efforts made in the area of combating racism and xenophobia and human trafficking and engagement in the field of international development cooperation. We thank Greece for accepting the recommendations made in this regard.
We would have wished to see our recommendation related to the ratification of the International Convention on Migrant Workers accepted in line with recommendation 1737 of 17 March 2006 of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. We hope that Greece will reconsider its position on this core HR instrument in due course.
We reiterate our appreciation for the contribution of Greece through Official Development Assistance despite financial constraints. We hope that the difficult economic situation that Greece is facing today will not negatively affect the achievement of Greece in the realization of economic and social rights.
We look forward to Greece implementing the accepted recommendation and recommend the adoption of the report of Greece.
I Thank you. |
